Review: The Cake Shop

New postby UrbanTallahassee » February 9th, 2009, 12:03 am

ImageA few years back, I was introduced to this place when a friend of mine asked me to go and pick up a little package from them. “It’s at The Cake Shop” she told me, “I’ve already paid for it.” To which I replied, “The What!?” As it would turn out, this was the type of place that has been in Tallahassee for years, but it wasn’t until a friend told me about it that I knew the place even existed. Although I was there to pick up a cake, I could not overlook the other products on display: Cookies, big and small, Cupcakes (yellow, chocolate, red velvet, boston crème, marble & more), Brownies, Lemon and Raspberry Bars
Apple Cake Squares & More.

Having grown up with somewhat of a sweet tooth, I could not resist the temptation to purchase something for myself. The friendly ladies at the Cake shop nicely explained to me what everything was and they even made recommendations on how to eat each item. “For the Apple Cake, you’ll want to warm it up in the microwave for about 19 seconds, and add a scoop of ice cream” one told me. To which I thought mmm… that sounds so good! So the Apple Cake became my first taste of the cake shop. Because I only had a debit card, and the Apple Cake had a small price of $1.85, I had to purchase a few more items to reach the minimum $5 requirement for a Credit/Debit purchase -- I RELUCTANTLY Image purchased a few of the cup cakes I saw on the platform behind the display case. All items were placed into a small white box, stamped “The Cake Shop”.

Well I hope she purchased plenty. I would have been mighty upset  with you if you even looked at mine too hard.

Something that always troubles me is when a merchant requires a minimum purchase for credit cards like they did/do at that cake shop. I did some research on it and found that it is a violation of the merchant agreements these stores have with Visa, Mastercard, etc., to require a "minimum" purchase before you can use a debit/credit card. This is worth a read in case anyone else ever encounters this again: http://www.bustachange.com/charging-you-to-use-your-credit-card-is-illegal/.

Wow Truicon! I never knew my ladies at the Cake Shop were breaking the rules. Go taste one of those cupcakes and you'd never complain about it.

But that was an interesting rule. I notice the rule cited is a tad specific:

9.12.3 Minimum/Maximum Transaction Amount Prohibited

A merchant must not require, or post signs indicating that it requires, a minimum or maximum transaction amount to accept a valid MasterCard card.

I used a VISA.

I love "The Cake Shop!" I visit the shop often. Even the people that I work with are starting to catch on. People know how to cheer up a hard working day with a treat from The Cake Shop! I prefer the regular mini cupcakes myself, but there are other treats I have also tried.

We recieved a tip today suggesting that The Cake Shop's lease at their current John Knox Rd. location is set to expire soon and that that the Cake Shop would be relocating to a new location on Capital Circle NE where Krispy Kreme/Donut Kingdom used to be, next to the McDonald's which is closest to the Famous Dave's BBQ.

Thanks TD.

I actually applaud this move. I think the high-traffic volume in that area will do wonders for The Cake Shops business! I can't wait to see how things are set up after the move.

Wow, my wife will be happy. They made my groom's cake back in 2000 which was incredible. Their marble cake with fudge icing and the cookie sandwiches are awesome.

The only problem with the new location, which they may be use to at their current location is the entrance to their shop. The new location requires you to enter from the back side of the strip. And that parcel is on the end without good access to the front entrance.

I was driving by the new location at lunch today. I appears they may be open for business now. At quick glance, it looks like they will be utilizing the drive-thru.

A buddy of mine went in yesterday and made a purchase. He told me they're using the same furniture / cases from the old store in the new location. To him it didn't seem the same. But the food still tastes good.

My gut reaction from the picture is downgrade. The old location was so quaint and charming. This just looks like any other bakery in a strip mall. If I didn't already know the bakery, I probably would not be inclined to try it.
