It was the So You Think You Can Dance road show. I had tickets but ran out of town last minute. I heard it was packed and amazing. (Just in response to the inquiry)

Thanks Galant! Yes... it must have been packed. There were cars spilling into every lot around the civic center for blocks. I thought it was a FAMU Homecoming event at first, but then realized they had their own arena and questioned if they would need to use the Civic Center. I'm glad you cleared that up for me.

Local News??

New postby fsuboy1209 » January 6th, 2010, 11:34 pm

Hey everyone! Sorry I have not been able to post in a while stuff has gotten busy here lately. :o

I wanted to give my opinion and get YOUR opinion on the local media in Tallahassee. This was a topic over at UrbanPlanet.org that I wanted to dig back into.

My Opinion

We have only have two local TV stations that actually have local news.

I have a "bone to pick" with both of them.

ABC27HD - This is the station that I prefer to watch because it seem to be more modern than WCTV.

I notice the little things when it comes to news. I like the camera angles they use when they come back from a break. I like how the set is pretty modern. (Compared to WCTV) The graphics and music don't look/sound like they are from the 70's.

BUT, the talent could use some work. There are some good anchors/reporters, and some not so good ones. I won't mention any names. They need to have more than one anchor per newscast.

WCTV - Great news, but VERY out dated. The new graphics are nice, but the same music? The music needs to complement the graphics and it just isn't working out the way it is. They need to use some new camera angels, just modernize things a bit.

AND PLEASE, WE DONT WANT TO SEE CURTAINS WERE THE SET IS NOT BIG ENOUGH TO TAKE UP THE WIDTH OF THE CAMERA.

That's my take on the two stations. I would really like to see more options when it comes to news.

I have called NBC 40. I got a nice young lady on the phone. I asked her if she knew if they planned on bringing back local news sometime soon. She told me she was not sure but they just got a new GM and it was a possibility. She did let me leave a voicemail for the new GM. A week later, I have not heard back.

To be honest, with it being Sinclair Broadcasting, I am not holding my breath. I think it would be nice to have Gannett buy the station. Gannett owns the Democrat and many other TV stations and does an excellent job with TV.

Afterwords, I called up Fox 49. I spoke to the programing manager. He told me that they just don't have it in the budget to have a "real" news station. They would continue to do the 10PM news through WCTV. He did though inform me that if they did get the money, they would bring in a full news team.

Good Day TLH??
I would love to see one of the local stations come up with something like "Good Day TLH" or something.
A morning show that was fun and interesting to watch while getting the news would be great.
If we could get one that would be on later into the day 9/10ish.

I know we are no LA but there is a station called KTLA. They are the CW affiliate in LA.

There morning news is GREAT! Its fun, entertaining, yet they deliver the news in a dependable way.

Here is a add for there morning news, you can kind of see what I am talking about:

^Hi FSUboy. I agree with much of what you wrote in your post. My opinion of local news has changed somewhat since that Original post from the beginning of that thread on UrbanPlanet that you referenced. I feel ABC 27 has improved substantially since then. The picture quality of this news channel is superb, their set is modern and bright, their music appropriate, the stories they cover feel relevant to my life, and I love the Ashley tower cam. As far as their talent is concerned, I truly don't have a big issue with any of their personnel. Sure there are slip-ups from time to time, but I feel they handle them professionally. Further, it appears they go to greater lengths to dress themselves than they used to, which is also a plus. Overall, I think ABC27 has surpassed CBS6 or WCTV as our area's television news leader.

I seem to have the same problems you have with WCTV's news -- I like the HD broadcast, the graphics and the weather, outside of this nothing seems to fit. The set does look outdated, the music is ABSOLUTELY ANNOYING!!! I lothe it! Whenever I think I'm going to hear it I quickly grab my remote control and turn the channel. When I watch this channel I feel like I'm watching Georgia's news. The personalities on this channel often feel dull, lifeless, stuck in yesteryear. And the weekend news crew appear to be teenagers.

I'm partial to 27 because it shows they are willing to make the changes necessary to better themselves. 6 seems complacent, IMO -- and I have an issue with complacency.

I'd love to get the news back on NBC. A morning show for Tallahassee?! I thought we had that already but maybe I was mistaken.

^Still not the same as watching the news on TV. But I suppose as we "progress" further into this "less human interactivity" society watching television personalities is going out of style. Soon we'll just have animated Pixar characters behind the news desk.

Ok... so I didn't want to panic about this, but I've noticed that Lauren Elise has not been on the ABC news for quite some time now. Because she happened to be my favorite anchor I must ask, what happened to her?

I've noticed the new gal, Anne Imanuel has been reporting during her slot. At first I didn't know Anne was new because I often watch the news without my glasses on and she looked like Lauren Dorsett to me. Back on topic, I just wanted to know if the Anne Imanuel thing is temporary or if Lauren Elise is gone for good. If so, I'm going to be extremely disappointed because I really liked her.

Also, what's with all of the new people on this channel in general?? ABC News is reverting back to where they were before when it felt like they were loosing control of their market share. I still prefer ABC to CBS for stylistic purposes, but I think they need to get it together.

I noticed WCTV's female weekend meteorologist has suddenly disappeared and has been replaced by some guy from Minnesota. Any info on the sudden departure?

The meteorologist on wctv said Wednesday on the goodmorning show she was leaving to get married. I'm assuming that involved her moving away, or she married rich and doesnt need to work anymore.

Gray Television could miss debt compliance

Gray Television could miss debt compliance

Sounds like Gray is going to have to tell all its stations to cut back even further. I wonder how it will affect WCTV.

Well, given what Maria Chung says on her blog about "retiring" and having a wedding in Santorini, my guess is that she's set for life.

The article references the loss of advertisement revenue from the auto industry and for the first time I'm realizing there are fewer car commercials on tv these days.

I just read a report that Gray losses are worse than anticipated. Doesn't look good.

Is this due to a decline in ad revenue you think. I honestly don't watch WCTV as much as I used to so I can't say I've noticed anything different.

The report I read dealt with Gray only not the individual stations so I don't know at this time if any edicts have been handed down from corporate. I subscribed to a couple of industry insider services while I worked at WCTV and continue to get email updates and one I received a couple of days ago had an update on Gray.
