Have perfectly good stores, and leave vacancies in shopping centers to build across the street.
I think people in Tallahassee worry too much about who's going to fill vacated store fronts. This city does a commendable job reusing those spaces as compared to others throughout our state and various other cities our size around the country. That said, I can't fault Publix for seeking to improve the quality of service it provides to its customers. I wish there were more companies that took pride in their corporate image and took steps to improve upon or build new facilities (Sears, KMart, City Hyundai, just to name a few).
It's hard for me to think of Publix as lousy considering the fact that they've helped to maintain and enhance the overall quality of life we enjoy as a community. So what if they leave an empty building behind here and there. Eventually someone scoops them up (Hhgregg, Golds Gym, State of Florida...)
