US 2010 Census

New postby trueicon » March 9th, 2010, 2:11 pm

Hi everyone! Long time reader coming out of lurking to mention what is perhaps the single most important driver of (future) growth in Tallahassee and Leon County-- the 2010 US census. I did not see another forum topic about the Census so I created this one.

I was impressed to see that Leon County has set up a web site to promote the Census: http://leoncountycensus2010.org/. While I'm very happy to see it is an issue that the local politicians see as important, compare the website to that of Miami http://www.miamicensus.com/Census/Home.html and especially Los Angeles http://www.lacounts2010.org/. I mention Los Angeles because of something they promote the census on many Los Angeles web sites that residents visit. Here in Tallahassee, there is a blurb about the census on the main TalGov web site-- but not on the actual site residents go to in order to pay their utility bill. Maybe that would be a good place to remind citizens about the important census?

Something important from the Leon County web site-- students are (supposed) to count as Tallahassee residents. I wonder if many of them know that they should fill out the census forms when they arrive in the mail at their Tallahassee address?

(according to the Leon County web site) Forms will be mailed out mid-March (so, next week) and April 1st is "Census Day".

Hi truicon! Thank you for creating this topic as I had totally forgotten to mention the census on here. I'm still thinking back to the 2000 census, actually remembering 1999 wondering if the census estimates that we usually recieve from the city's annual Statistical Digest, was on the low end or the highend regarding actual 2000 census count. I remember there being an element of shock back then when the county's number was released, and I'm wondering if the methods for tracking our population estimates have significantly improved since.

I'm also wondering when the rule changed that allowed college students to count as a part of the local population.

so how many of you are aware of the spending for the 2010 Census compared to previous years in relation to their participation rate? Between the marketing/advocation/mailings/etc...?

not pretty.

the mailings are free... the marketing was done in 2000 also... just not sure how much was spent on it. Still not sure why we need to advocate something thats been a law in this country since 1790 but believe it or not we've still got some stubborn folks living in America.

Free to Mail, but for the paper, printing, ink, etc...

Mail: HEY! We're going to mail you a census form in a week or so
TV: CENSUS! CENSUS! CENSUS!
Mail: Census is here! do it now!
TV: CENSUS! CENSUS! CENSUS!
Mail: Just reminding you to do your census!
Mail: Last reminder to do your census! If you have already sent it it, don't worry about it, and throw away this piece of paper and don't worry about recycling it

This was not done in 2010 in terms of funds spent on printed material and on the level of commercials for radio/tv

Glad we have the Census, but just a little flustered on the spending for it this year
