New townhouse project in SoMo, Cascades Garden

Unread post by chudan » Mon Apr 23, 2018 2:17 pm

https://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/ ... 537090002/

Is in block directly east of new Proof location across Monroe. Block includes Bahn Thai, which plans to stay on. Also, appears to be plans to link up South Gadsden through east side of this block.

I know some folk pooh-poohed Cascades Park, but I think that if that land is still a dead brownfield site, nothing that is suddenly going on in SoMo and to the north with the Cascades development ever happens.

Umm, that's how the area is being marketed.

and

plus pretty much anything linked here

That's the name the Tallahassee development circles have given to that district. Just like Collegetown, Midtown, Governor's Walk, Arena District, etc.

Yeah I know that but doesn’t mean we have to use it.😉 Red hot hatred of that outdated silly moniker over on Twitter & Reddit.

It's a terrible name. Agreed.

Every "urban" town has to have some trendy district with a 4 letter acronym as its name because thats the way of the Hipster this one is really close to Seattle's SODO district.

or the original Hipster district, SoHo in New York (short for South of Houston Street).

In fact, SoMo is so close to SoHo it was pretty much inevitable.

I don't mind the SoMo name. I'm a recent transplant to Denver from Tallahassee. Here in Denver we have:

RiNo (River North)
LoDo (Lower Downtown)
LoHi (Lower Highland)

This is increasingly more common. It sounds funny, sure, but don't be an old man in his robe yelling at kids to "Get off my Lawn!" Just let it happen.

This project looks great. Now if only the NIMBYs in Myers Park can keep their mouths shut about it. I swear, they are the absolute worst. They chose to live in the closest neighborhood to downtown, and then they constantly complain about all the development in the area. Just stop, please. If you wanted peace and quiet, you should have moved out to Killearn / Bradfordville / Southwood / Buck Lake like everybody else.

I know there are fine folks in Myers Park, and I'm friends with some of them. But their NIMBY neighbors are the worst. Only they could figure out how to complain about a tiny, 1-block neighborhood development that retains local businesses and has an environmentally friendly design, with one of the primary developers putting his money where his mouth is and moving into one of the units himself.

My greatest wish is that one day, some developer will have the stones to call their project "FOMO on SoMO"...
